Kulsum, a 7th-grade student of Haji Public School located in the Breswana village of Jammu and Kashmir, got the surprise of her life when her beloved author JK Rowling sent gifts for her and her classmates, fulfilling the promise she made on Twitter.
This magical (intended innuendo!) journey began in April when Kulsum, who happens to be a first-generation English learner, wrote an essay in English on her role model JK Rowling stating, “I am not inspired by JK Rowling only because she writes well but also because she has faced many difficulties but she never gave up. May Allah bless JK Rowling and give her a long life so that when I grow up, I get to meet her.”
Kulsum’s teacher and director of the school Sabbah Haji twitted the essay and wrote “Dear @jkrowling. Kulsum, 12, a first generation English learner from the Himalayas would like to meet you someday. So come visit us at #HajiPublicSchool.” A lot of Rowling’s fans noticed this essay, and soon Rowling did as well. She twitted “Please, can you send me Kulsum’s full name by DM? I’d love to send her something.”

Almost two months went by, people moved on and forgot about the whole incident, but Rowling didn’t! On June 23, Sabbah twitted “HELLO, WORLD. SO @jkrowling SENT A HUGE GIFT BOX FOR KULSUM AND FRIENDS. HANDWRITTEN NOTE, INSCRIBED BOOK, AND THIS IS ALMOST TOO MUCH TO HANDLE. We are so thrilled and squeaky, I cannot even. Thank you so much, Ms Rowling. Thread below. #HajiPublicSchool”
Rowling not only sent a personalized letter to Kulsum but also a box full of gifts for her classmates, the director posted photos and videos of the classmates unboxing the gifts, joyful and elated Kulsum and her friends can be seen in the pictures uploaded.

Rowling twitted “I’m so happy it got there! I was getting worried!” The director also uploaded the video of Kulusm who read aloud the letter written by Rowling; it said, “I have sent some things. I hope you like them. I am also impressed by your English. It would be an honour to meet you one day. With Love.”
Kulsum’s class teacher happily twitted, “today was our last day of class before Term 1 exams and look what arrived in the mail. GIFTS FROM JKR with personalized notes for Kulsum. All of class 7 (along with their director @imsabbah ) lost their minds.” She also mentioned that it was supposed to be a practice exam for Civics that day, but because of all the excitement, it didn’t take place.
Super! Feel elated from a thousand miles away. Respect for the thoughtfulness of JKR and great work of your School. #HajiPublicSchool @jk_rowling Kulsum and the class have now found a 'star' – let her be their North Star, lighting up their way!
