India and China leading in tree plantations, claims NASA

As per a recent study undertaken by NASA, it has been found that India and China are world leaders with regards to tree plantation. Upon analysing the data and information received through a satellite belonging to NASA, it has been concluded that the world is more green today than it was 20 years ago.

The chief author of the study, Chi Chen says “China and India account for one-third of the greening, but contain only 9 percent of the planet’s land area covered in vegetation — a surprising finding, considering the general notion of land degradation in populous countries from overexploitation.” This discovery came from the M.O.D.I.S. satellite, and the aforementioned study got published in the ‘Nature Sustainability’ report.

China alone is responsible for the 25% global increment in the area covered by trees, despite possessing merely 6.6% of world’s vegetated area. According to NASA, China has achieved this feat due to the increment of forests and croplands which have increased by 42% and 32% respectively. While India’s contribution comes from 82% of its croplands and 4.4% of its forests. China’s ambitions are set on increasing and protecting forests by reducing air pollution and practising water conservation.

Post the year 2000, India and China have seen an increment of approximately 35% in food productions. The co-author of this report, Rama Nomani says that the data is derived from the information received through ‘moderate resolution imaging spectrometer’ of NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites, and is derived from two decades worth of information. According to him, This is a definitive proof that humans solve the most difficult problems too when they realise the magnitude of danger they hold.

India and China weren’t concerned about this issue in the 1970s and the 1980s, it was only in the 1990s that they realised that this was a major cause of concern and took corrective measure to improve the situation.
